The summer Olympics this year were certainly memorable for many reasons, from the greening of Beijing, to Michael Phelps' record load of gold, to one of the most memorable interviews of George W. For example, the US state department released a report detailing how record opium production in Afghanistan is fueling a resurgence of the Taliban. If you haven't caught my drift yet, let me throw you a rope - I'm referring to February 29th, the summer Olympics, and open season on our sanity, the presidential campaign.įebruary 29th is certainly the shortest of these events, but that's not to say nothing memorable happened on leap day this year. Once again, as was the case with John McCain, he was not quick enough to express indignation to satisfy his blood-thirsty critics.Įvery four years we Americans are treated to a trifecta of happenings, two of which we share with the rest of the world, the third of which is available overseas only as an indigestion-inducing peep show. Their goal is to raise questions about Obama's character - how could he listen for 20 years to the conspiracy laden borderline psychotic rantings that have been exposed in several soundbites, without somehow internalizing, agreeing with, or somehow abetting the nutty worldview of his pastor? I think there might be some heft to this line of attack if Obama had been an impressionable altar-boy at Trinity church, but as a grown man of demonstrated intellectual rigor, it is quite a stretch to imagine that Obama would have bought any such tripe - his internal Socrates would have been parsing and filtering any such sermon he heard, and easily rejecting the hyperbole without breaking a sweat, while at the same time appreciating the opportunity to see more deeply into the cultural consciousness of an older generation of African-Americans. Which brings us to the other hand - voices on the right clamoring to " bring back Rev.
